How to claim it

Deadline: As early in the case as possible
  1. 1Ask which court your case is in before asking whether a docket exists. The Central Maryland Regional Veterans Treatment Court sits in the District Court and takes veterans charged with misdemeanours; a circuit court case is a different question.
  2. 2Ask about the regional dockets by name, not just about your own county. The Judiciary describes the Central Maryland Regional Veterans Treatment Court as covering Baltimore City and Baltimore County plus Carroll, Harford and Howard counties, and describes it as the third multi-county veterans treatment court in the state.
  3. 3Raise it with your defence attorney at once. Entry is a decision taken inside the case.
  4. 4Know that it is voluntary. The Judiciary words the regional court as a court-supervised, comprehensive and voluntary treatment-based programme — nobody is placed on it against their will, and nobody is entitled to it either.
  5. 5Ask what the court connects you to. The Judiciary states a veterans court connects eligible participants to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, long-term supportive housing, and other benefits for participants whose service-related disabilities prevent their return to the workforce.
  6. 6If you do not qualify for VA benefits, say so rather than assuming you are out. The Judiciary states the veterans court can also access local resources where the veteran does not qualify for VA benefits.
  7. 7Ask the problem-solving court coordinator directly if your attorney is unsure. The Judiciary publishes a coordinators list, and the coordinator is the person who knows the current admission criteria.

CorrectionThe regional model breaks the usual assumption. A veteran told that their county has no veterans court may still be inside a multi-county docket run from a neighbouring jurisdiction — ask about the region, not the county.
Worth knowingScale is worth knowing when you ask. The Judiciary describes 73 problem-solving courts in the state, of which the veterans dockets are a small part, and reported the Baltimore City programme as founded in 2015 with 117 graduates and 25 participants at the time of the 2024 launch.
