In assisted living, a veteran pays 90% of monthly net income — social security, pension, annuity, retirement income and the rest — but never more than the full monthly cost, and typically keeps a 10% spending allowance.
Skilled nursing is paid from personal resources, long-term care insurance, Medicare and Medicaid rather than on the assisted living formula.
The federal per diem the home receives is stated as $148.71 a day for nursing care, about $4,535.66 a month, and $64.19 a day for assisted living, about $1,957.80 a month, from 1 October 2025.
A veteran rated 70% or more service-connected may have the full cost of nursing home care covered.

How to claim it

1Check which of the eligibility routes fits you: a Maryland veteran who served on full-time active duty other than active duty for training and was discharged under honorable conditions; certain reserve component members meeting the residence test; or a Maryland resident aged 62 or over, or determined disabled by the Social Security Administration or the VA.
2A non-veteran spouse of an eligible veteran can be admitted — ask about it rather than assuming the home is veterans only.
3Settle the federal rating question first if you are close to 70%. At 70% or more the full cost of nursing home care may be covered, which changes the arithmetic completely.
4Ask which level of care you are applying for: 126 assisted living beds and 318 skilled nursing beds are separate queues, and there is a 16-bed women’s unit within the nursing programme.
