Who is entitled to it

  • You are the veteran.
  • You received an honourable discharge or a certificate of satisfactory completion of service — the reserves and National Guard count.
  • You are the spouse of an eligible veteran.
  • The veteran has a service-connected disability — which is what carries the spouse credit.
  • The surviving spouse of a deceased eligible veteran holds the credit in their own right.
  • The credit applies to Maryland State employment selection tests.

How to claim it

  1. 1Claim the credit with the application, with the DD214 or the certificate of satisfactory completion — Guard and reserve service counts on the certificate route.
  2. 2If you are the spouse of a rated veteran, or a surviving spouse, claim in your own right — Maryland is one of very few states whose points go to spouses at the full rate.
  3. 3Know the two exclusions before relying on it: a current State employee gets no credit, and neither does a veteran convicted of a crime after leaving service.

CorrectionSummaries of this credit say ten points plus two more for a service-connected disability. The statute read on the General Assembly’s own site says otherwise: the two additional points attach to former prisoner of war status, and disability matters through the SPOUSE credit — the spouse of an eligible veteran with a service-connected disability takes the full ten points. A rated veteran themselves takes the same ten as any other veteran.

Known gapCOMAR 17.04.03.06 is the regulation that governs veterans, seniority and resident points together, and read in full on the Division of State Documents it is a single sentence that does no more than point back at §7-207 for all three. There is no published stacking arithmetic to read, so we publish the statutory credits and say nothing about how several credits combine for one candidate.
