What this benefit is

A 60-day expedited licence if you hold one in another state — and, separately, statutory credit for military experience toward years of practice and for military training toward the education requirement.

What it's worth: A 60-day decision, plus credit for military experience and training

  • The value is time and requirements you do not have to repeat, not a fee. Title 2.5 does not waive the application fee — Maryland expedites and credits instead.
  • The 60-day clock runs from a COMPLETE application with all supporting documentation, so an application missing a document is not on the clock at all.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are a servicemember or veteran, or the spouse or surviving spouse of one.
  • The discharge was honorable, or general under honorable conditions.
  • Your home is in Maryland.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

Deadline: With your application; the 60 days runs from a complete one
  1. 1Send the DD214 and, if you are claiming through a spouse, the military orders and marriage certificate. Ask explicitly for expedited handling under the Veterans Full Employment Act — the unit does not apply it on its own.
  2. 2If you hold a licence in good standing in another state, ask about a temporary licence at the same time: a unit may issue one while you finish Maryland’s own requirements.
  3. 3Ask the unit to credit your service under §2.5-105. It has two limbs — relevant experience as an active service member counts toward years of practice, and military training or education counts where it is substantially equivalent to what the unit requires.
  4. 4If you are deployed and your licence is about to lapse, tell the unit before it does: §2.5-104 lets a unit take a late renewal without a penalty or reinstatement fee and let you finish continuing education within a reasonable time afterwards.
  5. 5Ask for the veteran notation on the licence itself under §2.5-103 while the file is open.

dd214 · proof of other licence · proof of residence
No renewal
Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingMaryland puts no time limit on the veteran side. The Department says the expedited route is open to a veteran with an honorable or other-than-dishonorable separation regardless of how much time has passed since discharge — unlike several states, which shut the door two years out.
Worth knowingSurviving spouses are covered, and the Department says so regardless of when the service member died. That is a wider door than the statute’s plain reading suggests.
Known gapTitle 2.5 governs the Department of Labor’s units. It does not apply to licences issued under Title 11, Subtitle 5 or 6 of the Financial Institutions Article, and health occupations are licensed elsewhere. Ask your own board rather than assuming Title 2.5 reaches it.
CorrectionThere is no licence fee waiver here. §2.5-104 removes a penalty and reinstatement fee for a deployed licensee renewing late, which is not the same thing as waiving the fee for a new licence.
