What this benefit is
The 2022 amendment tiers it: $100,000 of value protected at 50–69%, $120,000 at 70–99%, and the whole homestead at 100% or unemployability — exempt from all ad valorem taxation except for certain municipal tax assessments.
What it's worth: Tiered: $100,000 at 50–69%, $120,000 at 70–99%, everything at 100%/IU
- In assessed-value terms the tiers add $2,500 and $4,500 to the standard $7,500 homestead exemption; the 100%/IU tier exempts the remaining assessed value entirely.
- The state veterans department qualifies the 100% tier: exempt from all ad valorem taxation EXCEPT for certain municipal tax assessments. 'Everything' is not quite everything.
- The tiers are confirmed current on the department's statewide page: $2,500 additional assessed value at 50-69%, $4,500 at 70-99%, and full exemption at 100%.
