What this benefit is
A 25% discount on the liability portion of an auto insurance premium is available to active-duty personnel based in Louisiana, military reservists based in Louisiana, and members of the Louisiana Army National Guard or Louisiana Air National Guard. What it's worth: 25% off the liability portion of a Louisiana auto policy
- The 25% comes off the LIABILITY portion of the premium only. Collision, comprehensive and the other coverages are untouched, so the saving is well below 25% of the total bill.
- No dollar amount is claimed because the premium varies by driver, vehicle and parish. The weight above is an order-of-magnitude placeholder, not a quote.
- For the three serving categories the discount is what the law provides for. For veterans and retirees it is voluntary — the insurer decides — so it cannot be assumed for them at all.
Who is entitled to it
- The discount attaches to a policy covering vehicles owned by the military personnel themselves.
- You are in this state.

How to claim it
- 1Download the Louisiana Application Form for Military Discount from the Department of Insurance, complete and sign it, and send it to your agent or insurer with the eligibility documents the form lists.
- 2Bring the right proof for your category. Active-duty personnel and reservists must supply current military orders showing assignment to a duty station in Louisiana. Guard members must supply a letter from their commander on official unit letterhead verifying membership.
- 3If you dropped out of the discount because of the annual paperwork, go back. Bulletin 2026-11 changed the regulation so that eligible service members submit the form ONCE instead of every year, and the Commissioner said in terms that the change was made to bring more members in.
- 4If you are a veteran or a retiree, ask rather than apply blind. Insurers MAY voluntarily extend the discount to veterans with a VA rating of 50% or more and to retired members of the armed forces, the National Guard and the state’s Army and Air National Guard — the department’s wording is that it is at the carrier’s discretion.
- 5Check what it is being applied to on the declarations page. It is 25% of the liability premium, so the figure to look for is a reduction in that line rather than in the total.
- 6If the carrier refuses or cannot explain the treatment, the Department of Insurance runs an Office of Consumer Advocacy on 225-219-4775.
