How to claim it

  1. 1Take proof of veteran status to a motor vehicle field office. The department names proof of status as the condition for the designation and for any fee treatment.
  2. 2Ask about the fee explicitly. The department signposts discounts or waivers but publishes no figure, and points enquiries to the Office of Motor Vehicles — so the question has to be asked at the counter rather than assumed.
  3. 3A Veterans Parish Service Office can confirm what is currently available before you make the trip, and the department names those offices as the route for waiver questions.
  4. 4Do the plate in the same conversation if you are rated. A veteran with a disability of 50% or above may qualify for a disabled veterans plate or a military honors plate, and a veteran rated 100% for the 100% DAV plate.
  5. 5The "Support Our Veterans" and "Support Our Troops" specialty plates are a separate, paid option at a one-time $25 fee — they are not the free disability plates.

The department says veterans "may qualify" for discounts or waivers and gives no amount, no threshold and no form. Anything that presents a Louisiana veteran driver’s licence as free is going beyond what the administering agencies publish.
Worth knowingThe designation has a second use: once it is on the licence, proving veteran status at any other counter — a plate application, a parish office, a retailer — stops requiring the DD214.
