What it's worth: VETERAN printed on the front of the licence
- The statute sets no separate charge for the designation and does not make the licence free. Asking outside a renewal cycle usually means paying for a replacement licence.
- The same subsection structure carries through to the non-driver identification card, so a veteran who does not drive is not shut out.

How to claim it
- 1Bring the right piece of paper. Subsection (e)(1) names a DD form 214, an NGB form 22 or an equivalent discharge document showing character of service as honorable or general under honorable conditions.
- 2Guard and Reserve service is squarely inside this. The NGB Form 22 is named in the statute alongside the DD214, which is not true of every state provision of this kind.
- 3Note how wide the definition is. Subsection (e)(2) defines a veteran as a person who served in the active military, naval, air or space service, including the groups and individuals listed under 38 C.F.R. §3.7 — a list that reaches several categories of service most people would not expect to count.
- 4Know what the designation is for. It is proof of status at a counter, in a shop that offers its own courtesy discount, or to a police officer. No state benefit in this state is gated on holding it.
- 5If you also hold a disabled veteran plate, keep the two separate in your head. The plate proves a disability finding; the licence designation proves service.
