Registration and Plate Free at 50% — and Metered Parking With It

A disabled veteran — 50% or more service-connected here — may register a passenger vehicle, a truck up to 20,000 pounds gross or a motorcycle and receive a distinctive plate, both free of charge. The plate also carries free parking at meters.

  • No dollar figure is claimed. The statute waives the charge without printing a fee, and registration in this state varies with the vehicle, so the saving is the registration you would otherwise pay each year.
  • The parking privilege has real value in a city and none in a small town, so it is not reduced to a number here.

How to claim it

  1. 1Check the vehicle first. The statute covers a passenger vehicle, a truck with a gross weight of not more than 20,000 pounds, and a motorcycle, owned or leased and used by the veteran. A heavier truck is outside it.
  2. 2Leasing counts. The statute says owned OR leased, so a veteran on a lease is not shut out.
  3. 3Ask about the international symbol separately. Whether the accessibility symbol is printed on the plate turns on a different test — the definition of a person with a disability — and it decides what parking you get.
  4. 4A plate WITH the symbol allows parking in designated accessible spaces and at meters without charge. A plate WITHOUT it still allows metered parking without charge, and parking in attended paid public facilities.
  5. 5Someone who drives you can have a plate too. A Kansas resident who owns or leases a vehicle and is responsible for transporting a disabled veteran may apply — but that plate carries no fee waiver, only the regular registration fee.
  6. 6Bring the VA Benefit Summary Letter showing the combined service-connected evaluation, since 50% is the number the county treasurer has to see.

CorrectionThe caregiver plate is routinely described as though it carries the same waiver. It does not: a resident responsible for transporting a disabled veteran may apply for the plate "with no fee in addition to the regular registration fee" — the registration itself is still charged. Only the veteran’s own registration is free.
CorrectionFree metered parking does not require the accessibility symbol. A plate without the symbol still parks at meters without charge; the symbol adds the designated accessible spaces. Veterans who assume they need a separate disability placard for meters are paying twice.
Worth knowingThe 50% definition in K.S.A. 8-160 is specific to vehicles. This state runs at least three different disabled-veteran thresholds — 30% for the permanent hunting and fishing licence, 30% for the disabled veteran business preference, and 50% here — so a single rating opens different doors in different chapters.
Known gapHow many vehicles a veteran may register free was not settled from the text alone, and the fee schedule the waiver removes was not read. Confirm both with the county treasurer before assuming a second vehicle is covered.
