Six Documents, and No Office May Ask For a Seventh

1. 1Carry one of the six and know that it is enough: a United States passport as defined in 22 C.F.R. 53.1, an unexpired REAL ID state driver’s licence as defined in 6 C.F.R. 37, a VA health identity card, a veterans identification card issued under 38 U.S.C. §5706, a Department of Defense common access card, or a Department of Defense identity card listed in 32 C.F.R. 161(b).
2. 2The word to quote if an office asks for something else is "improvise". The statute forbids an agency both from demanding another document AND from improvising an authentication procedure — the second half is what stops a clerk inventing a form.
3. 3This governs eligibility for a benefit "derived from a service-connected disability suffered by a Kansas veteran". It is about proving WHO YOU ARE, and works alongside K.S.A. 73-1245, which governs proving the disability itself.
4. 4The veteran definition is deliberately wide: service in the active military, naval, air or space service, including the groups and individuals listed under 38 C.F.R. §3.7, and discharge or release under conditions other than dishonorable. A general discharge is inside it.
5. 5If an office refuses, ask them to put the refusal and the document they want in writing, then take it to the Kansas Office of Veterans Services rather than arguing at the counter.
6. 6The section was rewritten as recently as 2025, so an office working from an older desk instruction may not know the list is closed.
