How to claim it

Deadline: Within one year of the death
  1. 1Contact the county Veterans Service Officer as soon as the funeral is arranged — the office works by appointment and states that walk-in appointments are currently unavailable because of staffing.
  2. 2Say the words "county burial benefit". This is a county payment, distinct from the federal VA burial allowance, and asking about "burial benefits" generally will get you sent to the federal one.
  3. 3Watch the one-year clock. The county states survivors and family of a county veteran could be eligible for a county burial benefit of $500 within one year upon death — a family that settles the estate first and asks afterwards may find it gone.
  4. 4Bring the DD214. If the veteran recorded their discharge with the county at separation, a certified copy can often be produced the same day.
  5. 5File the federal claim in the same appointment. The federal VA burial allowance is a separate and generally larger benefit, and the county officer handles both.
  6. 6If the death was outside Hamilton County, ask that county’s own veterans service office. Indiana runs this at county level and the figures are not uniform across the state.

Worth knowingThe tier here is C on purpose. The county states a figure and a deadline and nothing else — no residency test, no discharge standard, no asset limit and no form. Treat the $500 as a question for the county office rather than as money to budget on.
Known gapIndiana appears to run a statewide burial allowance in its own Code as well, administered county by county. We could not read it, so we do not say what it pays or whether the $500 above is the whole of Hamilton County’s answer or its share of a wider scheme.
