What this benefit is

$2.75 for a year, or $27.50 for ten years, for a resident veteran with a service-connected disability — fishing and small game. No minimum percentage is stated: any service-connected rating reaches it, and so does disability retirement through the Department of Defense.

What it's worth: $2.75 a year, or $27.50 for ten years

  • The ten-year licence costs the same as ten annual ones, so its value is in not having to renew rather than in a lower price.
  • The state veterans department states eligibility as Indiana residents who served in the U.S. Armed Forces with either a VA service-connected disability rating or disability retirement benefits through the Department of Defense.
  • No percentage threshold is stated for the VA route. A low rating is not a reason to skip this.
  • Apply on State Form 50833 to the Department of Natural Resources, by post or in person. The department does not accept it by fax.

Who is entitled to it

  • You have a VA service-connected disability.
  • You are an Indiana resident.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Get the application from your County Veteran Service Officer or the DNR, and include your VA file number.
  2. 2Take the ten-year licence rather than the annual one unless you have a reason not to — same money, one errand.
  3. 3Buy deer and turkey licences and the gamebird, waterfowl and trout stamps separately. The DAV licence does not cover them.

Annual
Claimed once a year.
Worth knowingIt is a reduced fee, not a free licence. You still buy something — which also means you still have to remember to.
Worth knowingThe ten-year licence at $27.50 is the same price per season as the annual at $2.75. The gain is that it removes nine renewals, which is where entitlements like this are usually lost.
Known gapWe could not establish whether any disability percentage applies. The digest says "resident disabled American veterans" and names no threshold, and we will not turn the absence of a stated threshold into a claim that any degree qualifies. Ask the DNR or your County Veteran Service Officer if your rating is low.

Sources

Why only one source type: in.gov refused the connection outright on 18 August 2026 on both www.in.gov and secure.in.gov, so neither the DNR nor the Department of Veterans Affairs pages could be read, and law.justia.com returns 403. The Indiana regulations digest is the published guide to the licence schedule and carries the fees and the coverage, so we publish on it and say so.
