Tuition and Fee Exemption — Children of Disabled Veterans, POWs, MIAs and Purple Heart Recipients

Up to 100% of tuition and fees for 124 credit hours — but if your parent enlisted after 1 July 2011 the coverage is 20% plus their disability rating. Eligibility is wider than disability alone: children of veterans with hazardous peacetime duty carrying a service or campaign medal and a service-connected rating, children of POW or MIA service members, children of Purple Heart recipients, and former students of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home all qualify. Apply through ScholarTrack, with a FAFSA every year.

What this benefit is

Up to 100% of tuition and fees for 124 credit hours — but if your parent enlisted after 1 July 2011 the coverage is 20% plus their disability rating. What it's worth: Up to 100% of tuition and regularly assessed fees, for up to 124 semester credit hours

  • Coverage depends on when the veteran parent ENLISTED. Before 1 July 2011: 100% of tuition and regularly assessed fees at the resident undergraduate rate. On or after 1 July 2011: 20% plus the parent's VA disability percentage.
  • Eligible institutions are Indiana public colleges and universities, including Ivy Tech, Vincennes and Western Governors University.
  • The eligible populations under IC 21-14-4-1 also include children of veterans with hazardous peacetime duty who hold a service or campaign medal together with a service-connected rating; children of prisoners of war or those missing in action, where that status arose after 1 January 1960; children of Purple Heart recipients; and former students of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home.
  • A private non-profit institution option pays up to $5,000 a year, for students graduating high school in 2023 or later.
  • Application is through ScholarTrack, and a FAFSA must be filed every year.

Worth knowingThe enlistment-date split is the most consequential fact here and it appears in no summary we have seen. A child of a parent who enlisted in 2012 with a 30% rating gets 50% of tuition — 20 plus 30 — while the same rating on a 2010 enlistment gets 100%.
Worth knowingPeacetime service can qualify where it was equally hazardous duty recognised by a service or campaign medal, which is a route around the wartime requirement.
