Indiana Deducts Active and Reserve Military Pay

Indiana lets a resident deduct the actual amount of active or reserve military pay received. Combat-zone pay already exempt federally is not deducted twice. There is a SEPARATE deduction for Guard and reserve income earned on involuntary-order mobilisation, so a mobilised member should check both.

What this benefit is

Indiana lets a resident deduct the actual amount of active or reserve military pay received. Combat-zone pay already exempt federally is not deducted twice. There is a SEPARATE deduction for Guard and reserve income earned on involuntary-order mobilisation, so a mobilised member should check both.

What it's worth: The actual amount of active or reserve military pay, deducted

  • The deduction equals the ACTUAL amount of military income received, rather than a capped figure.
  • Combat-zone pay that is already exempt federally is not deducted a second time.
  • There is a SEPARATE revenue department deduction for Guard and reserve income earned on involuntary-order mobilisation. A mobilised member should check both, not one.
  • The saving is your marginal Indiana rate on the deducted amount, so it depends on your bracket.
  • This is different from the military RETIREMENT deduction, which the corpus covers separately. Both can apply in different years.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • You file in Indiana.

How to claim it

Deadline: With your annual Indiana return
  1. 1Claim the deduction on your Indiana return for the year, following the revenue department's deduction guidance.
  2. 2If you were mobilised on involuntary orders, check the SEPARATE Guard and reserve mobilisation deduction too. They are different provisions.
  3. 3Do not deduct combat-zone pay that is already exempt federally — it does not come off twice.
  4. 4If you also draw military retirement, claim that deduction as well. It is a different one.
