What this benefit is

An emergency assistance route for a current, non-recurring need — an electricity bill, rent, a car repair. Where payment support is approved, the money goes straight to the provider. Statements or bills must be supplied, and rent is confirmed with the landlord.

What it's worth: A current utility, rent or repair bill paid directly to the provider

  • The application states four threshold requirements: the applicant must be a resident of this state; must show veteran status or affiliation to the veteran; the request must be current and NOT ongoing, meaning it will not be repeated the next month and the veteran is actively trying to better their situation; and where payment support is requested — the form names an electric bill, rent or car repairs — statements or bills must be provided and the payment will be made directly to the providers.
  • The financial section of the form itemises rent or mortgage, then utilities broken into power, house gas and water, then food, then the car in payment, insurance and fuel lines. That is the shape of the need it is designed for.
  • Three documents are required: separation papers such as a DD-214 member 4 or similar showing character of discharge; the bills, statements, invoices or past-due notices that justify the amount requested, with rent confirmed with landlords; and proof of this state as home of record, current residency, or an intention to make it a new home.
  • Funds are requested from an array of state grants, local grants and local charities, and those providing the support make the final decision on whether to support and how much.
  • The form asks about efforts the veteran is making, whether VA benefits are being received or pursued, dependants, and the nature of the circumstances. It also asks whether other veterans service organisations have already assisted.
  • No award cap, service-length floor or income threshold appears anywhere on the application, so none is asserted here.

Who is entitled to it

  • Your home is in this state.

From what you have told us so far, you appear to qualify.

How to claim it

  1. 1Gather the actual bills first. The form is explicit that statements, invoices or past-due notices must justify the amount, and that rent will be confirmed with the landlord.
  2. 2Frame the request as current and non-recurring. The form’s own test is that the need will not repeat next month and that you are actively working to change the situation — a request that reads as an ongoing shortfall fails on its face.
  3. 3Sign every page. The form says all pages must be signed, including permission for the Joining Forces team to share your information across its network so the right funder can be matched.
  4. 4Say what you have already tried. The form asks whether other veterans service organisations have assisted, and answering it honestly speeds the match rather than hurting it.
  5. 5Do not confuse this with the statutory emergency relief programme, which is capped at $1,500 for life. If you have used that cap, this route may still be open.

No renewal
Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingPayment direct to the provider is the feature that makes this useful under a shut-off notice, and it is also the reason to apply before the account is closed rather than after. A provider that has already terminated service often will not simply reinstate on payment.
Worth knowingEligibility reaches "veteran status or affiliation to the veteran", so a spouse or dependant in the household is inside the wording. The form still asks for the veteran’s separation papers.
