What this benefit is

Skilled nursing at Milledgeville or Augusta for wartime veterans. A nominal daily fee is charged — and at a 70% service-connected rating, or where admission is for a service-connected condition, the VA pays that fee in full.

What it's worth: A nominal daily fee — paid in full by the VA at a 70% rating or for a service-connected admission

  • The department calls the charge "a nominal daily fee" and does not publish the amount, so we carry no figure.
  • Veterans below the 70% line may apply for the federal Aid & Attendance benefit to offset the fee.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served during one of the listed wartime periods.
  • Your discharge was under other than dishonorable conditions.
  • Your home is in Georgia.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Meet one of the two residency routes: resident of Georgia for the two years immediately preceding the application, or resident of Georgia for five or more of the past fifteen years. You must also be a current Georgia resident.
  2. 2Check your service period against the list: World War II (7 Dec 1941 – 31 Dec 1946), Post-World War II (1 Jan 1947 – 26 Jun 1950), Korea (27 Jun 1950 – 31 Jan 1955), Cold War (31 Jan 1955 – 1 Aug 1990), Vietnam (1 Jul 1964 – 7 May 1975) and Persian Gulf (2 Aug 1990 – present).
  3. 3Get the VA to approve you as eligible for skilled nursing care — that approval is a separate condition of admission, not a formality.
  4. 4Expect health screening: applicants must be free of contagious infectious disease and of behavioural and psychiatric problems, and must not need to be sustained by line-operated mechanical means.

CorrectionThe Cold War era on this list runs 31 January 1955 to 1 August 1990 and counts. Read together with the open-ended Persian Gulf period from 2 August 1990, almost any post-1955 service falls inside a qualifying period — a veteran told they are "not a wartime veteran" for these homes should read the dates before accepting it.
Worth knowingTwo residency routes, not one. Two years immediately before applying will do; so will five of the last fifteen. A veteran who moved back to Georgia recently after a long spell here earlier may still be inside the second route.
Known gapThe department publishes no spouse admission criteria for these homes and no dollar figure for the daily fee. Both are unread rather than absent — ask the admissions office.
