Georgia’s regulated utility discounts are real and worth up to $33.50 a month, but every route into them is age, income or programme based. Veteran status, a VA disability rating and a veterans pension appear nowhere in the published criteria for electricity, natural gas or telephone.

- The Public Service Commission’s own income-qualified discount advisory sets out the criteria for each regulated utility and names no veteran route for any of them.
- The electric utility’s own income-qualified discount page lists four qualifying routes — 65 or older with a household meeting the income test, receipt of Social Security Disability Insurance, receipt of Supplemental Security Income, and participation in the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program — and a $33.50 monthly discount. A veterans pension and a VA survivors benefit are not among them.
- The natural gas discounts described by the commission are age 65 or older with an income test, delivered as a credit against the base charge or a waiver of the monthly customer charge.
- The telephone discount described by the commission is up to a $9.25 credit on the local monthly bill, for recipients of TANF, Supplemental Security Income, food stamps or Medicaid, or for someone already holding a senior discount from the gas or power company.
- The commission’s assistance-programme advisory names weatherization, the state low income energy assistance programme, a charitable fuel fund and the income-qualified discounts, with LIHEAP eligibility at or below 150 percent of the poverty level for Georgia. Veteran status is not named as a qualifying route or as a priority group in any of them.

How to claim it
- 1Do not spend time looking for a veteran discount on a Georgia utility bill. The commission’s own advisory enumerates the routes and none of them is service related.
- 2Test yourself against the routes that do exist instead. On the electric side those are: 65 or older in a household at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, receipt of Social Security Disability Insurance, receipt of Supplemental Security Income, or participation in the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program.
- 3A veteran drawing Social Security Disability Insurance reaches the electric discount through that, not through service. It is the same $33.50 a month either way.
- 4For natural gas, the route described is age 65 or over with the income test, and the relief is applied to the base charge or the monthly customer charge rather than to usage.
- 5For the telephone credit of up to $9.25 a month, check the qualifying programmes — and note that already holding a senior discount from the gas or power company is itself a route in.
- 6Ask about the low income energy assistance programme separately. The commission gives its eligibility as annual income at or below 150 percent of the poverty level for Georgia, responsibility for the primary heating source costs, and citizenship or lawful admission.
- 7If a company representative tells you a veteran discount exists, ask them to point to the published criterion. It is more likely to be a courtesy on a bill credit than a tariff term.

CorrectionThis is a published absence, not a gap in our research. Three official pages that each enumerate the qualifying routes were read this session, and a veteran route is on none of them. We carry it at weight_hint 0 so it never counts as a benefit.
Worth knowingThe nearest thing to a veteran route runs through disability rather than through service. A veteran receiving Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income is inside the electric discount on that ground, and VA compensation is not what the utility is testing.
Known gapMunicipal utilities, electric membership corporations and water and sewer authorities are outside the commission’s published criteria and are not researched here. If a veteran discount exists anywhere in Georgia utilities, that is where to look, and it is recorded as a candidate.
