How to claim it
Deadline: At need — most requests supported on 24 hours’ notice- 1Have the funeral home submit the request if one is engaged — the form is built around a funeral home representative or a family member acting as point of contact, and asks for their relationship to the deceased.
- 2Do not delay the request while you hunt for the DD Form 214. The programme states that a request may be submitted without proof of service and that it will obtain the information later.
- 3Give the programme 24 hours where you can. It states that in most cases honors can be supported within 24 hours’ notice.
- 4If there is less than 24 hours’ notice, submit the request immediately and follow it with a telephone call rather than waiting for a reply — that is the programme’s own instruction.
- 5Have the details the form asks for to hand: the deceased’s name, rank, Social Security number and branch, and the date, time, location, address and county of the service.
- 6Say whether the service is at a chapel, at the cemetery, or elsewhere. The form asks, and the detail is placed accordingly.
- 7Ask whether full honors are directed in your case. A retired service member, a service member who died while on duty, and a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient draw the larger detail with a rifle volley or pallbearers.
- 8If the DD Form 214 has been lost, the programme points to the National Archives for a copy of a deceased veteran’s military records.
- 9Ask about additional honors. The programme states that it works with veterans service organisations across the state to coordinate more where they are available.

CorrectionA missing DD Form 214 is not a reason to wait. The programme states plainly that a request may be submitted without proof of service and that it will obtain the information afterwards — which matters, because the paperwork usually surfaces days after the funeral.
Worth knowingThis is separate from anything the memorial cemeteries do. Honors are rendered wherever the service is held, including a private cemetery or a funeral home chapel, so a family burying a veteran outside the state cemetery system should still ask for them.
