National Guard Service-Cancelable Loan — a Loan That Service Pays Off

A student loan for an active member in good standing of the Georgia National Guard, paid at a per-credit-hour rate set for each institution, up to 120 semester or 180 quarter paid hours. It is cancelled by continued service — which is why the paperwork calls it a loan and the outcome is usually a grant.

What this benefit is

A student loan for an active member in good standing of the Georgia National Guard, paid at a per-credit-hour rate set for each institution, up to 120 semester or 180 quarter paid hours. It is cancelled by continued service — which is why the paperwork calls it a loan and the outcome is usually a grant.

What it's worth: A per-credit-hour award set for your institution, up to 120 semester or 180 quarter paid hours

  • The commission publishes a per-hour rate table by institution rather than one statewide figure. On the table covering the Fall 2026 through Summer 2027 terms, per-hour rates run from $110.00 at several state colleges to $176.00 and $189.00 at four-year universities, with a small number of institutions on a flat-band schedule instead.
  • Two institutions on that table are banded rather than per-hour: one at $2,301.00 for the first six hours and $3,886.00 from seven hours, another at $3,012.00 for the first six hours and $5,067.00 from seven hours.
  • A student is eligible for a maximum of 120 semester or 180 quarter paid hours.
  • Where other aid must by the donor’s terms be applied to tuition, the commission reduces this award by the amount of that aid.
  • The commission states that final eligibility and the award amount are determined by the college or university.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are an active member in good standing of the Georgia National Guard.
  • The loan is made to the serving member.
  • Your home is in Georgia.

How to claim it

Deadline: Set by your institution each term
  1. 1Confirm you are an active member in good standing of the Georgia National Guard. That is the condition the commission tests, and it is tested against your unit, not your recollection.
  2. 2Check the enrolment floor: at least half-time in a certificate, diploma, baccalaureate, graduate or first professional degree programme.
  3. 3Look up your own institution on the commission’s award table before you budget. The rate is per credit hour and it differs sharply between a state college and a research university.
  4. 4Count your paid hours. The lifetime ceiling is 120 semester or 180 quarter paid hours across the programme, and hours already funded elsewhere in the state aid system can matter.
  5. 5Keep Satisfactory Academic Progress as your college or university defines it. The commission defers to the institution’s definition rather than setting its own.
  6. 6Clear the disqualifiers: you cannot be in default on a federal Title IV or State of Georgia educational loan, or owe a refund on a federal or State of Georgia student financial aid programme.
  7. 7Meet the citizenship and registration conditions — a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen for the 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the first day of the term of funding, and Selective Service registration where it applies.
  8. 8Stay compliant with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990, which the commission names as an eligibility condition in its own right.
  9. 9Ask the commission in writing what happens to the balance if you leave the Guard before the service cancellation is complete. It is a loan on the paperwork and that is the moment it behaves like one.

CorrectionThe headline "up to 100% of tuition" is not what the commission publishes. What it publishes is a per-credit-hour rate that varies by institution, so whether it covers your tuition depends entirely on where you enrol.
Worth knowingThis is a service-cancelable loan, not a grant. Continued qualifying service is what cancels the balance, and the consequences of leaving early are a matter for the commission’s regulations rather than something the eligibility page sets out.
Known gapThe service-cancellation terms — how much service cancels how much loan, and what happens on early separation — were not established from the commission’s own pages this session. Ask before you sign.
