Filing early
In several states, filing before your VA letter arrives preserves your effective date — the claim is decided later but dated from when you filed.
Why it can matter
We have not verified whether District of Columbia preserves an effective date on an incomplete application. Because it can be worth a full year elsewhere, ask your County assessor directly rather than assuming either way.

Filing in that window applies the deduction to the whole tax year; April to September filings get the half-year.
