What this benefit is

An active member of the state Army or Air National Guard receives the same tuition waiver at the state universities and community colleges that a wartime veteran receives — no 90-day wartime test, no discharge, because the member has not left.

What it's worth: Tuition waived at the state universities and community colleges for an active Guard member

  • Tuition only. Student activity fees, course and laboratory fees, books, parking, room and board all charge normally.
  • Membership must be active. The waiver follows current standing in the Guard, and the system requires certification of that standing.
  • A member activated under federal Title 10 orders is named on the same page as remaining inside the waiver.
  • The statutory basis is CGS 10a-77(d) for the community colleges, 10a-99(d) for the regional universities and 10a-105(e) for the university. Cite the one that matches your institution.

Who is entitled to it

  • The waiver is claimed by the serving member.
  • Your home is in this state.

How to claim it

Deadline: Before each semester’s registration
  1. 1File the application with your unit before the semester begins — the unit, not the campus, starts the process.
  2. 2Get the certificate of eligibility to the campus certifying official BEFORE you register. The system states registration cannot complete without it on file.
  3. 3Repeat this every semester. The certificate is not a standing entitlement.
  4. 4Budget for the fees. The waiver removes tuition and nothing else, and at a fee-heavy campus that remainder is real money.

Worth knowingThis is the sibling of the wartime veterans waiver already in this corpus, not a copy of it. The veterans waiver turns on discharge and 90 cumulative wartime days; this one turns on being an active member in good standing right now.
CorrectionThe certificate of eligibility gates registration, not billing. A member who leaves it until the bill arrives has already missed the step the system says must happen first.
Known gapNo statutory citation appears on the system’s page, and the legislature host is unreachable. The section number behind this waiver is therefore not stated here.

Sources

Why only one source type: The state college and university system publishes the waiver categories, the scope and the certification requirement itself. The legislature host has refused every connection attempted by this project, so the statute was not read alongside it.
