The Word VETERAN on Your Licence — and a Branch Identifier Too

Colorado prints a veteran indicator on a driving licence or ID card, and separately a branch military identifier — Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy or Space Force — for anyone who has served or is serving. Present the original Member 4 DD-214, a valid military ID or a common access card once, at a driver licence office. Once it is on, no further documentation is needed at renewal. Out-of-state identifiers do not transfer.

What this benefit is

Colorado prints a veteran indicator on a driving licence or ID card, and separately a branch military identifier — Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy or Space Force — for anyone who has served or is serving. Present the original Member 4 DD-214, a valid military ID or a common access card once, at a driver licence office. Once it is on, no further documentation is needed at renewal. What it's worth: VETERAN, and a branch identifier, printed on your licence or ID

  • There are TWO separate marks: the veteran indicator, and a branch military identifier. You can have both.
  • The branch identifiers available are Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy and Space Force.
  • The identifier is available to anyone who has served OR is serving — not only to veterans.
  • Proof is presented ONCE: the original Member 4 DD-214, a valid military ID card, or a valid common access card. After that no documentation is needed at renewal.
  • Out-of-state identifiers do NOT transfer. Moving to Colorado means doing this again.
  • The fee is not established from the sources reviewed.
  • Its practical value is as proof — Colorado's August parks pass, among others, accepts the marked licence in place of a DD-214.

How to claim it

  1. 1Go once to a driver licence office with the ORIGINAL Member 4 DD-214, a valid military ID, or a common access card. A photocopy of the DD-214 is not what is asked for.
  2. 2Ask for both marks if you want both — the veteran indicator and the branch identifier are separate.
  3. 3You will not need to prove it again at renewal, which is the main reason to do it early.
  4. 4If you moved from another state, do it again here. Out-of-state identifiers do not transfer.
  5. 5Once it is on, use the licence as proof for other benefits rather than carrying the DD-214 about.
