Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Take the completed Military Licence Plate Application to the county DMV with the DD214 (honorable), the VA letter stating a 50%+ service-connected disability, the registration or title paperwork, and proof of insurance and emissions where required.
  2. 2Ask the clerk about the registration-fee and ownership-tax treatment on the plated vehicle — reported widely, not stated on the Division’s page, and the 2020 bill that would have clarified it failed.
  3. 3Talk to your County Veterans Service Officer first if anything is unclear — the Division routes applicants there by design.

Known gapThe registration-fee and specific-ownership-tax exemption on a DV-plated vehicle is consistently reported but is NOT on the Division’s page, and HB20-1190 — which would have decoupled that exemption from the plate — failed in 2020. Ask the county clerk with the statute rather than assuming either way.

Sources

Why only one source type: The Division of Veterans Affairs page — reachable only through a rendered browser — states the free plate, the 50% gate and the county-DMV application in terms. The DMV’s own pages remain unreadable.
