What this benefit is

A Colorado-resident active duty member stationed outside Colorado can have their driving licence extended by three years, free, online or by post on form DR 2342 — provided the licence expired no more than three years ago. It is typically processed in 24 to 48 hours, and there is no retest if you visit a Colorado driver licence office before the extension runs out. What it's worth: A free three-year licence extension while stationed outside Colorado

  • The member must be a Colorado resident on active duty stationed OUTSIDE Colorado.
  • The licence must have expired no more than three years ago. Past that, the extension is not available.
  • It is free, and applied for online or by post on form DR 2342, with a commanding officer's letter or a copy of military orders.
  • Processing is typically 24 to 48 hours.
  • There is no retest, provided the holder visits a Colorado driver licence office before the extension expires. Letting the extension lapse costs you that.
  • Spouses and dependents are NOT currently eligible. They become eligible on 1 January 2027 under enacted law — do not apply for them before then.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are on active duty.
  • You are a Colorado resident.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply online or by post on form DR 2342, with a commanding officer's letter or a copy of your orders.
  2. 2Check the three-year limit on expiry first. A licence expired longer than three years is outside the extension.
  3. 3Diary a visit to a Colorado driver licence office BEFORE the extension expires. Doing that avoids a retest; missing it does not.
  4. 4If you are asking on behalf of a spouse or dependent, the answer is not yet — that route becomes effective on 1 January 2027.

Worth knowingA spouse and dependent route is enacted and takes effect on 1 January 2027. It is named here so a family knows it is coming, and is deliberately not described as available now.
