  • The designation itself carries no charge. The ordinary duplicate or renewal fee still applies if you ask for the designation before your licence is due — the saving is the designation, not the card.
  • The published renewal fee for a non-commercial licence is $20.
  • The extension runs to the earlier of discharge plus 90 days or return to the state plus 90 days.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply on the driver licence or identification card application and present one of the accepted proofs: a DD Form 214 or 215, an NGB 22 or 22A, a letter from the veterans department identifying you as retired or discharged under honorable conditions, or a valid military identification card.
  2. 2Time it with a renewal if you can. The designation is free; a duplicate card requested early is not.
  3. 3If you are stationed overseas, use the remote renewal route — the division accepts deployment orders, a leave and earnings statement, a vision test and identification copies by submission rather than in person.
  4. 4Do not assume a commercial licence is covered. The division states that commercial holders cannot extend and must license in the state where they are.

CorrectionThe designation being free is not the same as a free card. If you ask for the designation before your licence is due you pay the ordinary duplicate fee — the division says so plainly, and it is the point people get wrong.
Worth knowingThe overseas extension is not open-ended. It ends at the earlier of discharge plus 90 days or return to this state plus 90 days, so a member who comes home on leave can start the 90-day clock without meaning to.
Known gapThe division’s veteran licence plate page lists the unit designators available but publishes no plate fee, no disability threshold and no fee waiver, so no plate record is carried here.
