  • The division states it issues a temporary military licence within 30 days of a complete qualifying application, barring anything unforeseen.
  • A temporary licence may be extended once for a further 180 days, on form 08-4832 and a $100 temporary licence fee. The extension has to be approved before the first licence expires — the division asks for up to three weeks.
  • The separate permanent route under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act carries its own application and its own fees; there is no fee waiver on either route.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply through MY LICENSE on myAlaska. The application is online only and takes a credit card.
  2. 2Submit the temporary application and the permanent one separately — the division says plainly that applying for the temporary licence does not start the permanent application.
  3. 3If you served, send documentation of military training, skills and experience with the application. AS 08.01.064 requires the department or the board to accept military education, training and service for some or all of the qualifications otherwise required, once equivalency is determined.
  4. 4Deployed to a combat zone, danger pay post or hazardous duty area? There is a section in the online application to request deferral of licensing requirements, authorised by AS 08.01.100.
  5. 5Check the exclusions before you plan around the SCRA route: architects, engineers, big game guides, big game transporters and marine pilots are outside it, because the division treats the Alaska scope of practice for those five as different from every other state.

The temporary licence is a state creature under AS 08.01.063; the permanent one runs on the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, whose requirements the division notes were changed on 23 March 2025. They are separate applications and the division says so explicitly.
