What this benefit is

AS 43.70.030 charges a disabled veteran $25 a year instead of $50 for a state business licence. The discount attaches to the sole proprietor, so incorporating or forming an LLC loses it.

What it's worth: $25 a year instead of $50

  • AS 43.70.030(a) sets the fee at $50 a year, "except that the fee is $25 if the business is a sole proprietorship and the sole proprietor is ... (2) a disabled veteran".
  • A two-year licence is priced at twice the annual fee, so the saving doubles across the two years rather than changing shape.
  • Only one discounted fee applies. The same subsection gives the $25 rate to a sole proprietor aged 65 or over, and a veteran who is both does not stack them.

This record exists to correct a myth. Published summaries get this Alaska benefit wrong. The record below is what the source actually says.

Who is entitled to it

  • You run, or are forming, a business that needs a state licence.
  • You hold a service-connected disability rating.
  • Your home is in this state.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Claim the reduced fee on the business licence application or renewal, with documentation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs showing a service-connected disability.
  2. 2Keep the business a sole proprietorship if the discount matters to you. The statute prices it for "a sole proprietorship" whose "sole proprietor" is a disabled veteran — a corporation, LLC, LLP or LP pays the full fee whoever owns it.
  3. 3Weigh that against the liability protection an entity buys. A $25 saving a year is not a reason to trade away limited liability, and this record is not advice to do so.

Worth knowingThe money here is small and the structural point is large: this is a discount on a person, not on a business. Any advice that says "form an entity first, then claim your veteran discounts" gets this one exactly backwards.
Known gapThe statutory definition of "disabled veteran" for this section was not located in the compilation read this session. The division states it wants VA documentation of a service-connected disability, and the rule here gates on holding a rating rather than on a percentage.

Why only one source type: The statute text was read in the division's own March 2026 compilation of business licensing statutes and regulations, which is both the enacted text and the administering agency's publication of it.
