Under the previous G.I. Bill, veterans were allowed to use their education benefits for a maximum of 15 years. With the new GI Bill, this time limit no longer applies to veterans leaving active duty after 2013.

What Is the GI Bill Flight School Loophole?

Congress included a loophole in the original Post 9/11 GI Bill—flight training at a flight school was considered vocational training and capped at approximately $10,000 per year. A flight-training degree program at a private college was initially capped at roughly $17,000 per year.

For veterans learning to fly on a public college’s two- or four-year degree program, flight-training expenses are treated as fees, and there is currently no cap on these fees. Congress has been working on this loophole recently.
