Understanding the 2025 COLA Increase

The Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is an annual increase designed to help veterans maintain their purchasing power as the cost of living rises. The 2.5% increase for 2025 is tied to the Social Security Administration's COLA, which is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).

This adjustment ensures that veterans' disability compensation keeps pace with inflation, helping to preserve the real value of their benefits. The increase applies to all disability compensation payments, including basic rates and additional amounts for dependents.

Veterans don't need to take any action to receive the increased rates. The VA automatically applies the new rates to all eligible payments, and veterans will see the increase reflected in their December 2024 payments.

Additional Compensation for Dependents

Veterans with disability ratings of 30% or higher receive additional compensation for dependents, including spouses, children, and dependent parents. The amount varies based on the veteran's disability rating and the number and type of dependents.

Example: 100% Disabled Veteran with Dependents

  • Veteran alone: $3,831.30/month
  • Veteran with spouse: $4,044.91/month
  • Veteran with spouse and one child: $4,201.91/month
  • Veteran with spouse and two children: $4,358.91/month

Additional amounts are also provided for each dependent child under 18, children over 18 attending school, and dependent parents. Veterans should ensure their dependent information is up to date with the VA to receive the correct compensation amount.

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)

Special Monthly Compensation provides additional benefits for veterans with severe disabilities or specific conditions that require special care. SMC rates also increased by 2.5% for 2025, ensuring that veterans with the most severe service-connected disabilities receive appropriate compensation.

SMC is paid in addition to regular disability compensation and covers conditions such as loss of limbs, blindness, need for aid and attendance, and other severe disabilities that significantly impact daily living.
