TRICARE for Retirees

TRICARE for Retirees

TRICARE serves as the comprehensive healthcare program for a wide range of individuals across the globe, including:

    • Active-duty service members (ADSMs)
    • Active-duty family members (ADFMs)
    • National Guard and Reserve members and their families
    • Retirees and their retiree family members
    • Survivors
    • Specific former spouses

TRICARE effectively combines the healthcare assets of the Military Health System, including military
hospitals and clinics, with an extensive network of civilian healthcare providers, healthcare facilities,
pharmacies, and suppliers. This collaborative effort is dedicated to promoting, safeguarding,
maintaining, and restoring the health and well-being of those entrusted to its care.

TRICARE for Retired Service Members and Their Families

Healthcare Choices

Retired Service Members and their families have several healthcare options to consider:

  • TRICARE Prime
  • TRICARE Select
  • US Family Health Plan (available in specific U.S. regions)
  • TRICARE For Life (with Medicare Part A & B coverage)
  • TRICARE Select Overseas

Additionally, adult children who “age out” at 21 (or 23 if they are attending college) may meet the criteria to purchase TRICARE Young Adult.

Dental Coverage

You may also be eligible for dental coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision
Insurance Program (FEDVIP).

Medically Retired Service Members

To be placed on the Temporary Disabled Retirement List (TDRL), certain criteria must be met:

  • You must have a physical condition, injury, or disease that renders you unfit for military service.
  • You must have a disability rating of at least 30 percent, separate from the rating given by the
    Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

You will undergo periodic re-evaluation, typically every 18 months, for a maximum of five years. Based on the results, you may:

  • Remain on the TDRL
  • Be separated from service
  • Return to active duty
  • Be placed on the Permanent Disability Retirement List (PDRL)

While on the TDRL or PDRL, you remain eligible for TRICARE benefits for retired Service Members, as detailed above, and your eligible family members also qualify.

If your service-related disability rating is less than 30 percent and you are separated from active duty, you may be eligible for transitional healthcare benefits, including:

  • Transitional Assistance Management Program
  • Continued Health Care Benefit Program

Retired National Guard or Reserve Members

Benefits for retired National Guard or Reserve members depend on the sponsor’s age:

  • You may also qualify for dental coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision
    Insurance Program (FEDVIP).
  • If you are under age 60, you may be eligible to purchase TRICARE Retired Reserve.
  • Upon reaching age 60, you and your family become eligible for the same benefits as all other
retired Service Members (as previously described).

TRICARE for Retired Reserve Members and their families
Retired Reserve Members and their families have various options available to them depending on the age of the retiree.

Health Plan Choices
For Those Under 60
If you retire and are under the age of 60:

  • You and your family may be eligible to enroll in TRICARE Retired Reserve.
  • Failure to enroll in TRICARE Retired Reserve means you won’t be eligible for any other TRICARE
health plans until you reach the age of 60.
  • If you enroll in TRICARE Retired Reserve and have adult children who “age out” at 21 (or 23 if they are attending college), they may have the option to purchase TRICARE Young Adult.

Age 60 and Beyond
Upon reaching the age of 60, you and your family become eligible for the same TRICARE health benefits as all other retired service members. Your health plan choices vary depending on your location:
Within the United States, you have access to:

  • TRICARE Prime
  • US Family Health Plan
  • TRICARE Select
  • TRICARE For Life (when enrolled in Medicare Part A & Part B)

Outside of the United States, your options include:

  • TRICARE Select Overseas
  • TRICARE For Life (when enrolled in Medicare Part A & Part B)

Moreover, adult children who “age out” at 21 (or 23 if attending college) may have the opportunity to enroll in TRICARE Young Adult.
