What is SGLI?

Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a low-cost term life insurance program designed to provide financial protection for active duty service members, reservists, and National Guard members. SGLI offers up to $500,000 in coverage at significantly reduced rates compared to civilian life insurance policies.

Coverage Amount

Up to $500,000 in $50,000 increments, providing substantial financial protection for your beneficiaries.

Low Cost

Only $26 per month for maximum $500,000 coverage (effective July 2025), including TSGLI protection.

Eligibility Requirements

Who Qualifies for SGLI?

  • Active-duty members of Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marines, or Coast Guard
  • Commissioned members of NOAA or USPHS
  • Cadets or midshipmen of U.S. military academies
  • ROTC members engaged in authorized training
  • Ready Reserve or National Guard members scheduled for at least 12 inactive training periods per year
  • Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) volunteers in mobilization category

Coverage Options

Full-Time SGLI

Available to active duty members and qualifying reserve/guard members. Provides up to $500,000 in coverage with automatic enrollment at maximum amount unless you elect a lower amount or decline coverage.

Part-Time SGLI

For Reserve members who don't qualify for full-time coverage. Provides coverage during periods of active duty for training and inactive duty training.

Extended Coverage

If you become totally disabled while covered by SGLI, you may be eligible for up to 2 years of free coverage extension after separation from service.

Important Notes

  • • SGLI is term life insurance - it has no cash value
  • • Coverage automatically reduces to zero at age 60 unless converted
  • • You can convert to VGLI within 1 year and 120 days of separation
  • • Premium deductions are automatic from military pay

How to Apply or Make Changes

Active Duty

Contact your unit's personnel office or use the online SGLI portal to make coverage changes or update beneficiaries.

Reserve/Guard

Work with your unit administrator or contact the VA Insurance Center at 1-800-419-1473 for assistance.
