What is the Post-911 GI Bill?

The Post-911 GI Bill (Chapter 33) is one of the most comprehensive education benefits available to veterans and service members. Enacted in 2008, this program provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.

Eligibility Requirements

You may be eligible if you:

  • • Served at least 90 days on active duty on or after September 11, 2001
  • • Received a Purple Heart on or after September 11, 2001, and were honorably discharged after any amount of service
  • • Served for at least 30 continuous days and were honorably discharged with a service-connected disability
  • • Are a dependent child using benefits transferred by a qualifying veteran or service member

Tuition and Fees

Public Schools

Full in-state tuition and fees covered

Private Schools

Up to $29,920.95 annually (2025-2026)

Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA)

The MHA is based on the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates for an E-5 with dependents, corresponding to your school's ZIP code. For the 2025-2026 school year:

  • In-person attendance: Based on school location BAH rates
  • Foreign schools: $2,338.00 per month
  • Online-only training: Maximum $1,169.00 per month

Books and Supplies Stipend

You'll receive up to $1,000 per academic year for books and supplies, paid proportionally based on your enrollment status.

Important Updates for 2025

Rudisill Supreme Court Decision Impact

Effective August 1, 2025, veterans with two or more qualifying periods of active duty can combine benefits from both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill, increasing the maximum entitlement from 36 to 48 months.
