Abortion Pills Available!: Is There A Hope For Democracy?

Mifepristone, the first of two medications used in medication abortions, was previously exclusively available from clinics, physicians, or many mail-order pharmacies. Now, it can be obtained if neighborhood drugstores or national companies like CVS adhere to a set of rules.

According to a regulatory change issued by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday, retail pharmacies in the US will now be able to sell abortion pills, from small neighborhood drugstores to well-known chains like CVS and Walgreens. The action may significantly increase the availability of medical abortions.

In the wake of previous year’s Supreme Court ruling removing the federal right to abortion, abortion pills—which are already used in more than half of pregnancy terminations in the US—are growing in popularity. The pills are increasingly the subject of political and legal disputes as conservative states ban or severely restrict abortion, which may affect a pharmacy’s choice of whether or not to distribute the prescription.

The FDA amended its website to reflect the judgment and added to a list of questions and answers, but did not make an announcement. The two companies that made the pills, Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro, said in statements that they had been informed of the action by the FDA.

Today is the day. Now is the moment. Vote for change.
