What is On-the-Job Training (OJT)?

On-the-Job Training (OJT) programs allow veterans to use their GI Bill benefits while learning job skills directly in the workplace. Unlike traditional classroom education, OJT provides hands-on experience with real-world applications. You'll earn a salary from your employer while also receiving monthly education benefits from the VA, making it an excellent way to transition into civilian careers.

  • • Training must be necessary for the specific position
  • • Maintain satisfactory progress throughout the training period

VA Education Benefits for OJT

Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits (2025)

Monthly Housing Allowance Schedule:

Months 1-6: 100% of BAH rate

Months 7-12: 80% of BAH rate

Months 13-18: 60% of BAH rate

Months 19-24: 40% of BAH rate

Months 25+: 20% of BAH rate

Note: BAH rate is based on the training location's ZIP code at E-5 with dependents level

Montgomery GI Bill Benefits (2025)

Monthly Payment Schedule (3+ years service):

Months 1-6: $1,828.50

Months 7-12: $1,340.90

Months 13+: $853.30

Note: Rates may be lower for 2-3 years of service

Application and Setup Process

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Find and apply for jobs that offer or are willing to provide OJT
  2. Get hired by the employer and negotiate OJT terms
  3. Employer submits VA Form 22-8794 (OJT Agreement) to VA
  4. Apply for VA education benefits if not already done (VA Form 22-1990)
  5. Submit Request for Change of Program (VA Form 22-1995) for OJT
  6. Begin training and submit monthly verification forms
