Montgomery GI Bill Overview
Understanding MGIB-AD benefits, eligibility requirements, and monthly payment rates for 2025
What is the Montgomery GI Bill?
The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD), also known as Chapter 30, provides education benefits to veterans who served on active duty. Unlike the Post-9/11 GI Bill, MGIB-AD provides a monthly stipend directly to you, rather than paying tuition directly to schools. This program requires a financial contribution during service and offers different benefits than newer GI Bill programs.
Eligibility Requirements
Basic Eligibility Criteria:
- • Honorable discharge from active duty
- • High school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit before completing initial active duty
- • Contributed $100 per month for first 12 months of service (or $1,200 lump sum)
- • Served continuously for required period (typically 2-3 years)
- • Did not decline MGIB-AD enrollment when entering active duty
2025 Monthly Payment Rates
Payment rates are effective from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. The amount you receive depends on your length of service, type of education, and enrollment status.

MGIB-AD vs. Post-9/11 GI Bill
Important Decision Point
If you're eligible for both MGIB-AD and Post-9/11 GI Bill, you can now use both programs for up to 48 months total (effective August 2025). However, you can only use one program at a time.
Consider factors like school costs, housing allowance differences, and transferability when choosing which benefit to use first.
