The Department of Veterans Affairs offers benefits to survivors of some veterans. Veterans Administration (V.A.) provides survivors’ life insurance programs, monthly compensation, and medical care. Veterans can also get home loans through the V.A. To continue to receive benefits; family members must:
- Veterans Affairs rates the service member as totally and permanently disabled.
- Any service member who died in the line of duty.

Claiming a Life Insurance Policy
VA Form 29-4125 must be completed to file a life insurance claim. The Veterans Administration will require a copy of the veteran’s death certificate and any other documentation required.
How Are Life Insurance Claims Paid?

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) offers low-cost term life insurance to military members.
Claim death benefits by completing and submitting SGLV 8283 and Claim for Death Benefits.
When the deceased was a reserve officer or was discharged from active duty before death, the following services can be sent along with the claim:
- The death certificate (or a photocopy) should be provided.
- 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, to the Defense Department.
- Form NGB-22, Report of Separation and Military Service.
- Documents related to separation.
Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) Claims
Family Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) may be appropriate if the spouse is not a military member. The FSGLI is available to spouses and children of active-duty military members whose SGLI also covers them. For spouses and dependent children, FEGLI provides coverage up to a maximum of $100,000. A person cannot have more than $50,000 in coverage with their spouse.
Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) Claims
SGLI (Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance) can be converted into inexpensive term life insurance.
- An SGLI policyholder and is eligible for VGLI coverage.
- Their active duty or reserve service has ended in the last year and 120 days.
- During active or inactive duty for training for fewer than 31 days, the individual was injured or disabled and no longer qualifies for standard premium rates.
At discharge, SGLI coverage continues for 120 days at no cost to the member so that VGLI will not kick in until day 121. Members who qualify for VGLI will receive three applications:
- Usually within 60 days after separation.
- Within 120 days of the end of the SGLI free coverage period.
- The application deadline is sixteen months after the application deadline.
Even if the member does not receive a mail application, they must still apply before the deadline.
SGLI Traumatic Injury (TSGLI) Claims
To be eligible for Traumatic Injury Protection, a uniformed service member must be covered by the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance program.
Armed forces members, reserves, and those assigned to funeral honors are covered.
Individuals without SGLI coverage or spouses and children are not covered under TSGLI.
TSGLI coverage will compensate a member up to $100,000 if they suffer a traumatic injury.
No matter which coverage one wants to choose, TSGLI charges a flat rate.
TSGLI, as per V.A. guidelines, covers a wide range of traumatic injuries. The following are included:
- An amputation at the wrist or ankle of a hand or foot.
- The same hand’s thumb and index finger have been severed at the metacarpophalangeal joints.
- It is characterized by quadriplegia, paraplegia, or hemiplegia.
- There are third-degree burns on three-quarters of the body or the face.
- A person with a traumatic brain injury cannot perform two of the six activities of daily living.
Other Life Insurance Claims
Insurance policies for veterans mortgages (VMLI)
Veterans with severe disabilities can purchase V.A. mortgage life insurance (VMLI).
If a veteran meets the following criteria, he or she may be eligible for VMLI:
- To apply for a Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant from the V.A. to construct or remodel an adapted home; AND
- The house must be titled; AND
- Have a mortgage on a home.

FSGLI Claims for Family Members
The branch of service casualty assistance must submit the SGLV 8283A, Claim for Family Coverage Death Benefits, to the Office of Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (OSGLI).
SGLI Traumatic Injury (TSGLI) Claims
The form SGLV 8600, Application for TSGLI Benefits, is available for downloading from the service department’s point of contact. The form must be submitted with the supporting documentation to the service branch indicated on the form.
