How much will I get each month during an apprenticeship?

Your wage plus MHA: 100% of the training site's E-5-with-dependents BAH for months 1-6, then 80%, 60%, 40% and 20% for each following six months under Post-9/11. MGIB pays $1,950.75 for months 1-6 (3+ years, from Oct 1, 2026), then $1,430.55, then $910.35.

Does an apprenticeship use up my GI Bill?

Yes. Full-time training (at least 120 hours a month) charges one month of entitlement per month; partial months are prorated, so it consumes fewer months than college.

How do I find an approved program?

Use the Apprenticeship Finder at apprenticeship.gov, filter the VA GI Bill Comparison Tool for 'OJT/Apprenticeship', or contact your State Approving Agency; the employer must be VA-approved before you can be paid.

Can I start an apprenticeship while still in the military?

Yes. USMAP lets active-duty members log hours toward a DOL journeyworker certificate, and SkillBridge lets members within 180 days of separation train with civilian sponsors.

What if my employer is not VA-approved?

Employers can apply through the State Approving Agency (federal employers apply through VA directly). Approval is free and typically takes a few weeks.
