Should Opioids Be Recommended For Chronic Pain To Veterans?

According to the latest study by the US Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense , the use of opioids for managing chronic pain in Veterans has gone through revised recommendations. The practice guidelines were published on Feb 14 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Along with their colleagues, Friedhelm Sandbrink, Veterans Health Administration’s MD, updated the 2017 guidelines and offered 20 new recommendations for strict vigilance on opioid intake in Veterans.

The authors discussed how dangerous opioids could be for treating or managing non-cancer chronic pain. They also recommended against the usage of long-term opioid therapy, especially in the younger generation of Veterans. The study also stated the dangerous side effects and chances of overdoses associated with opioids.

Do you think opioid therapy should be recommended to Veterans suffering from non-cancer, chronic pain?
