US Women’s Soccer Team Responds to Right-Wing Outlets’ False Accusations

The US women’s soccer team was surrounded by false controversy when a series of online posts claimed that some team players turned their back on a WWII Veteran.

The allegations were part of right-wing media who posted inaccurate footage of some players facing their back towards a 98-year-old World War Two Veteran Pete DuPre, who played the national anthem on his harmonium before a match against Mexico on July 5th.

However, to counter the false allegations, the team shared a heartwarming video of how every team member individually greeted DuPre, thanked him for his courage, and signed his ball.

Former Trump press secretary Sean Spicer spiced up the rumors by tweeting, “Embarrassing and disrespectful. If you are embarrassed to be an American, then don’t play on the US team – there are plenty of the people ready to take your place @USWNT.”

One of the users also tweeted, “He did an awesome job. Too bad that some of the USA team that turned their backs on him do not understand what blood was shed so they could have their little protest fit.”

To clear up the false allegations, the team stated that some of the members were simply facing a flagpole and not turning their back against the Veteran.

The team tweeted, “No one turned their back on WWII Veteran Pete DuPré during tonight’s anthem. Some USWNT players were simply looking at the flag on a pole at one end of the stadium. The players all love Pete, thanked him individually after the game and signed a ball for him.”

The team also posted a heartwarming video clip of all the players greeting DuPre individually and captioned it as “This is respect.”

According to the US Soccer Federation, the team shares a special relationship with DuPre and first met him in Normandy, France, in January 2019.
