Since Russia invaded his country nearly ten months ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been tethered to the ground.
His multiple speeches to foreign leaders and assemblies have all been delivered via video conference, usually with the Ukrainian leader sitting in an unassuming windowless room wearing his trademark olive-green military uniform.
Zelensky and Biden are seeking to demonstrate to the Ukrainian and American peoples, Western allies, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the world that US support for Ukraine remains solid and durable. The trip to Washington is a high-profile effort to ensure that further aid to Ukraine does not slip off the Republican agenda in the new year.
