31 Mar What do you think of the brand-new book that gives American soldiers access to wellness through the arts globally?
2019 saw Todd Burkhardt’s retirement from the military, and he soon discovered he was having trouble adjusting to civilian life. He was the director of Indiana University’s Army ROTC program after serving for more than 27 years on active duty as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army.
The feedback has been overwhelming only the first few weeks after the book’s release in February. They have received petitions thus far from 21 states and service members stationed abroad in Saudi Arabia and other countries. Also, they have received requests from service providers, veteran treatment courts, fire and paramedicine departments, and other organizations. Daugherty has been in touch with other art therapists looking to use the book in their treatment sessions nationwide.
Veterans and active duty military personnel commit suicide at the highest rate in the nation (17 to 22 veterans commit suicide daily), according to Burkhardt. The number of veterans in Indiana, ranked 16th overall, is just over 400,000. Hopefully, this book will benefit the veteran community locally and globally.
