20 Apr Should the US increase or decrease foreign aid spending?
“President Trump has proposed deep cuts in foreign aid spending, intending to slash nearly a third of the budget. This has sparked a debate over the role of foreign assistance funds in boosting growth, promoting democracy, and saving lives. Addressing the U.S general assembly 2018, Trump said, “Moving forward, we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and, frankly, are our friends.”
Economists continue to criticize several aspects of the global foreign aid system as ineffective or counterproductive. Analysts in Congress also have criticized U.S. aid as wasteful spending.
Those in favor of an increase in foreign aid believe life-saving humanitarian aid has helped save millions via anti-HIV/AIDS and anti-polio campaigns. They assert foreign aid spending has increased political stability, expanded economic opportunity, and boosted U.S. popularity.
