05 Dec Should the government raise the federal minimum wage?
“Employers are directed to pay workers the highest minimum wage as per federal, state, and local law. Since July 24, 2009, the federal government has dictated a general minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. As of January 2018, there were 29 states with a minimum wage higher than the federal minimum.
Those in favor of a higher minimum wage believe that the current federal minimum wage is way too low for anyone to survive on and a higher minimum wage will help generate jobs and boost the economy.
Opponents argue that such a move will disadvantage many businesses who cannot afford to pay their workers more and will be forced to lay off or reduce hiring, resulting in increased unemployment for low skilled workers.
