New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern announces shock resignation before upcoming election, Is This The Right Move?

According to Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand prime minister won’t seek reelection in the October election because she does not have the energy.

Speaking at a news conference, Ardern said her term would end by February 7, when she expects a new Labour prime minister will be sworn in – though “depending on the process that could be earlier.”

Political scientist Bryce Edwards at Victoria University of Wellington called Ardern’s resignation “shocking” but not entirely unexpected.

“Her government has plummeted in the polls while she is celebrated throughout the world,” he said. On October 14, New Zealand will hold its next general election.
