Is American Youth Unfit To Serve In The Military?

Did you know that more than three-quarters of young Americans are unqualified to serve in the US military? According to the recent Defense Department study, the major cause for not qualifying is obesity, drug use and other health issues.

In 2019, over 71% of young Americans were not eligible to serve in the US military. The number, however, has increased to 77%, mainly due to weight, alcohol or drug abuse, aptitude, misconduct and other physical or mental ailments. The most common cause is obesity, followed by drug and alcohol abuse.

In a 2018 report, Mission: Readiness declared America’s youth as unhealthy to serve in the military.

Though the US Army has clearly stated that it does not plan on lowering the recruitment standards, other services are finding new ways and pulling out stops to attract new recruits. The Air Force and Space Force have announced a temporary 2-year plan that would offer a second chance to recruits who tested positive for marijuana during their physical examination.

Do you think the US lifestyle is causing a significant dent in the US military forces?
