The United States' Golden Oldies Win the Mixed Cross-country Team
In Saturday's inaugural snowboard cross mixed team gold for the United States, Lindsey Jacobellis and Nick Baumgartner, both 76 years old, won their second gold of the Beijing Games.
Jacobellis, 36, and Baumgartner, 40, were the senior pair to compete in Saturday's mixed team competition, but they won in a nail-biting final.
Jacobellis, who earned the United States its first gold at the Beijing Olympics this week for the women's snowboard cross, began the final run strongly but was quickly overtaken by Pyeongchang gold medalist Michela Moioli of Italy.
The next two racers, for Canada and Italy, fell behind and later collided on each other.
Despite being on Moioli's heels, Jacobellis edged out the Italian at the last second, winning by 0.2 seconds.
In the end, Canada won bronze.
An emotional Baumgartner told journalists after the final: "Don't count old people out ever!" he added that the years of training and competition helped them win gold.
The feeling of getting pushed out by the younger generation is really bad, so to go out and show that we're not done yet, we just have to work a little harder and we're willing to put the work in is nice to feel."
In some ways, Jacobellis' victory this week made up for a career-defining fall that he suffered at the 2006 Turin Games.
We've been through a lot together, so to be able to work as a team, learn from each other ... I thought we did great today," she said.
A Canadian who took bronze, Eliot Grondin, said it was impressive to see the Americans dominate the race.
Having witnessed these people race since he was born, he said. Having the opportunity to share a final with those guys ... it's insane." Nick is 20 years older than me.
Beijing marked the debut of the mixed team event, but most snowboarders were already familiar with the course at Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou having raced individual competitions there earlier in the week.
Snow-covered Zhangjiakou ahead of the final, covering the ground with a fresh layer of powder. The air temperature dropped to -11 degrees Celsius (122°F) and visibility was low.
The Australian boarder Belle Brockhoff was taken off the course on a stretcher during a frenetic quarter-final race.
