The Justice Department says West Virginia Holds the Key to America's Energy Future

In an unusual address in the Lower Rotunda of the State Capitol Friday, Governor Jim Justice seemed to indicate West Virginia was ready to be the answer to the nation’s energy problems.

“Today, this country needs to be energy independent in every, single, solitary way. That independence starts right here, in of all places, little old West Virginia,” Justice said to a gathering of lawmakers and supporters.

Justice’s 17 minute address did not name any specific policies or stipulate any initiatives he wanted to pursue, but rather seemed to leap frog from one subject to another focused heavily on Vladimir Putin and Russia’s targeting of innocent civilians in the War in Ukraine.

“There’s a mad man on the loose, maybe just maybe a nuclear weapon will go off, we don’t have time. Why in the world did it happen? It happened out of weakness and it happened out of dependency. We do not have to be dependent on folks around this world as far as energy,” he said.

Justice also addressed those who fear the impact fossil fuels may have on climate change. The Governor said he truly doesn’t know if fossil fuels are contributing to any sort of climate change, but added now is not the time to deal with the issue.

“Today this world is threatened beyond belief and we’ve got to shove it aside. We cannot continue to hold onto something we do not even know,” said Justice of the climate change issue.

Justice instead touted West Virginia as the solution to fuel the nation’s energy needs with coal, oil, and natural gas. He called West Virginia the beacon the

nation is seeking.

“I truly believe in all my heart that God above wants us to progress and like it or not, civilization only progresses with abundant, cheap energy. It doesn’t progress any other way,” said Justice.

He closed his remarks with a jab at Putin and a suggestion the Russian leader is a calculated bully taking advantage of weak leadership in Washington DC and capitalizing on fear.

“A bully understands only one thing. If you ask a bully to stop and he doesn’t stop, in my opinion, you drill his ass,”
