Alleged Veteran Charity Fraudster Charged with Defrauding $250,000 from Veterans Charities

According to court records, a woman who allegedly claimed to be a Marine combat veteran dying of lung cancer has been accused of defrauding roughly $250,000 from veterans charities since 2017.

According to the Justice Department, Cavanaugh, 31, was charged with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and related offenses after she allegedly preyed on organizations that give money to veterans in need.

The investigators say she raised over $4,700 through a GoFundMe campaign allegedly to assist with the expense of medical bills in connection with cancer treatment. Cavanaugh said she saved Marines after a roadside bomb blast as part of that fundraising campaign.

She cheated The Code of Support Foundation, a nonprofit that helped her get more than $18,000 in money and benefits. The group contacted Matthew Pucino Foundation, which paid more than $10,000 for furnace repairs for Cavanaugh, believing she was a cancer-stricken combat veteran.

Also, a Code of Support donor paid $900 to cover Cavanaugh's gym fees, and she also asked for help with her mortgage and other expenses. One email she sent asked for $1,500 to pay her bills. Cavanaugh reminded the Code of Support that she had a Purple Heart in a follow-up email.
