Polytrauma/TBI System of Care
Polytrauma results when a service member has suffered injuries to multiple parts of their body, or to multiple organ systems, or to both. Polytrauma occurs most often as a result of blast injuries from explosives or rocket-propelled grenades in combat situations and as a result of motor vehicle accidents otherwise.
Traumatic Brain Injury, or “TBI,” is frequently among the conditions associated with polytrauma, which can result in significant cognitive or mental impairments as well as physical ones.
Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers
Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers, or “PRCs,” provide polytrauma patients with the most intensive care. There are five operating PRCs:
- James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, Florida
- McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond Virginia
- Minneapolis VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota
- South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) in San Antonio, Texas
- VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) in Palo Alto, California
