CBD Helps To Beat Learned Fear

Most recent statistics indicate that around 18.2 million veterans in the US suffer from some form of mental illness. It’s assessed that almost 37,000 are homeless and countless struggle with anxiety, depression, insomnia, and PTSD.

Unfortunately, due to the stigma attributed to mental health, only 50% of veterans seek out help. Most of the vets opt for “self-medication” that far too often leads to addiction and substance abuse. Furthermore, prescription pills come with their own set of adverse side-effects.

What Is Learned Fear?

Veterans, especially those who have actively engaged in combat, run into a risk of developing learned fear after exposure to multiple traumatic events. Learned Fear includes PTSD and other anxiety disorders.  Research suggests, however, that CBD can be useful in reducing learned fear and associated anxiety.

Scientific Evidence

A 2015 study of 49 CBD samples shows that oral doses ranging from 300 to 600 mg can significantly reduce stress and anxiety related issues. However, the researchers caution that most of the studies they considered involved short-term CBD use for anxiety and that long-term human studies are needed.

CBD Oil And Learned Fear

It has been proved to disrupt the reactivation of existing memories, which can lead to a decrease in fear when memories are retrieved. CBD decreases fear expression acutely. It also enhances extinction, a psychological process where exposure therapy helps to inhibit learned fear. Lastly, CBD has shown help with learned fear that is related to specific cues, such as sounds like fireworks, gunshots, and sirens.

How CBD Oil Works?

According to pre-clinical insights, CBD has two major pathways in the rodent brain:

  1. 5-HT1A agonist: 5-HT1A is primarily a subtype of the serotonin receptors present in our brain. It is important to mark this subtype since the medications for anxiety and depression basically target this site. The current anti-depressant therapies involve the treatment by Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs include Zoloft and Prozac. They reduce the uptake of serotonin in the brain by blocking its reabsorption. When serotonin is not being absorbed in the brain, its availability in the synaptic space between two consecutive neurons increases. Now since serotonin is available in the synapse, it helps our brain transmit more serotonin signals, as a result of which, there is a significant reduction in the episodes of anxiety. As mentioned, the basis of treatment of anxiety is through the serotonin receptor system, CBD is known to decrease the action time and hence provides relief in symptoms much faster than SSRIs. So the bottom line is, CBD produces the anti-depressant as well as the anti-anxiolytic effects much faster than the conventional treatment modality for the same.
  2. Hippocampal Neurogenesis: The hippocampal brain of the lobe can be called as the mastermind since it is associated with functions like cognition and memory formation. Brain scans of patients with anxiety often present a smaller and degenerating hippocampus. On the other hand, a successful recovery from anxiety shows the generation or ‘genesis’ of new neurons (Neurogenesis). According to studies, CBD might have a significant role to play in hippocampal neurogenesis, thus making it an ideal choice as an anti-anxiolytic drug.

Additionally, CBD provides soothing benefits that aids veterans to relieve stress, anxiety, and symptoms associated with sleep issues. Also, CBD oil for Learned Fear has no harmful side effects and is non-addictive.

I have not used CBD myself, however, I have witnessed the effects from friends and family that have used it for multiple reasons. All of the assertions in this article seem to be backed up by what I have witnessed. There does seem to be a difference in the method used to ingest CBD (i.e. oils vs orals, etc) as well as the types of CBD. Fortunately, there are a number of reputable CBD shops popping up all over the country that can help explain the differences and discuss what effects you are trying to achieve.
